The green face of Dordrecht
These are characteristic for the Island of Dordrecht: the flat landscape of Holland with long tree-lined dykes, ditches and high, cloudy skies.
It is no distance and yet the contrast between the city heart and the space of the natural countryside is vast. Dordrecht is the largest city of the Netherlands on an island, with a rural area which is still intact. City and island form a wonderful, indivisible unit between the islands of South-Holland and the islands of Zealand in the south-west Netherlands. The green face can also be found within the city boundaries. The spacious parks reveal this. Residents of Dordrecht are familiar with the Weizigt Park, Dubbelmonde Park, Merwestein Park, Sterrenburg Park, Wantij Park and Wielwijk Park.
The former Dordwijk country estate is perhaps the most beautiful, but has limited access. The new residential areas, such as Stadspolders, were set up along the lines of the city parks. It is therefore possible to find, between the urban development, over four hundred hectares of green.
