The paintings by Jacob, Aelbert and Benjamin Cuyp form a unique partial collection within the museum’s collection. A retrospective overview of the work of this family of painters from Dordrecht cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
Aelbert Cuyp is one of the most important landscape artists of the Golden Age. He is particularly famous for his sun-drenched landscapes where cows and horses graze. His father, Jacob, was a leading portrait artist and tutor to a whole generation of artists from Dordrecht. His half-brother Benjamin, who primarily painted biblical paintings in the Rembrandt style, also belonged to this group.
