As an artist, the Dordrecht-born Ary Scheffer (1795-1858) created furore in Paris. In the Louvre in Paris, his paintings hang alongside famous French painters such as Delacroix and Gericault. The Dordrecht Museum, however, is the only museum able to exhibit a virtually complete overview of Scheffer’s diverse oeuvre. The core of the Scheffer collection is a legacy from Scheffer’s daughter, who bequeathed the inventory of her father’s atelier to the museum in 1899. Through the years, this collection has been supplemented with acquisitions and gifts.
